Text Box: SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING

The services listed below are provided by certified educators of students who are deaf or hard of hearing:

Observation        	
In-class observation of academic instruction time with evaluation of instructional strategies, hearing accommodations/modifications, communication access, access to the general curriculum, and the acoustic environment.

Educational Consultation
Available on a variety of topics, such as:              	
Observation follow-up meeting to share recommendations with the academic team, including parents, teacher(s), SLP, Special Education staff, paraprofessionals, and child if appropriate
Educational strategies, specialized learning materials and resources to address student’s specific needs
Student social skills development
Modifications of physical/acoustic environments
Research-based information around speech and language skill development, language choice, communication methods, educational placement, and audiological evaluations
Assistance with the interviewing and hiring of appropriate support staff; i.e. interpreters and paraprofessionals.
Participation in evaluation planning, determination of appropriate assessment tools and attendance at various meetings related to student’s program.
Support for educational transitions (i.e. Early Supports to school, High School to College, etc.)
Curriculum modifications or adaptations

Follow-up phone or email consultation and support

Consultants available over phone or email to consult with educators or parents after initial consultation has occurred. 

Report                 	
Written document detailing observation/recommendations that is sent to parent/school staff.

Attendance at Meetings              	
One or more of the following:       
Progress meeting
IEP or 504 meeting
Three-year Evaluation planning meeting
Three-year Evaluation meeting (teacher certified in the area of disability required
Transition meeting  

Teacher In-service       
In-service to school personnel regarding the educational implications of a hearing loss and inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing students into the regular classroom.

Peer In-service             
In-service for child’s classmates on hearing, hearing safety, hearing aids/FM systems, and communication strategies.

Audiological Support   
Consultant will interpret reports, explain/simulate hearing loss, train school staff on daily listening checks, and make acoustic recommendations. 

FM System/Hearing Aid Technical Assistance Services 
Liaison with the child’s audiologist, obtain verification of FM system specifics, help team order FM system, train and coach all users of the FM system, basic troubleshooting.
